Show Stock in Simulation

No201 image-0001

Simulate mode with tool and stock shown.

In addition to the ordinary Stock Simulation mode, you can use the "Show Stock" function inside the normal Simulation mode. From within the Simulate mode, it is possible to show the tool, toolpath and stock individually or together, by enabling or disabling the respective "Show Tool", "Show Toolpath" and "Show Stock" options.

Single Stepping in Simulation

In Simulation, it is possible to single-step through the toolpath by clicking the Next and Previous buttons while the simulation is paused, each click will jump to the next or previous point in the toolpath.

A faster shortcut is to hold down the Shift key while scrolling the mouse wheel. Scrolling up will move to the next point, and scrolling down will move to the previous point.

Showing Stock Removal Information

No161 image-0001

Removed stock per operation and tool.

HSMWorks 2011 R1 now has the ability to show the amount of stock removed by each operation, and each tool. The information can be generated by running the Stock Simulation to the end of the toolpath, and is output to the log and event window.

Avoiding Unnecessary Regeneration

Even though the calculation speed in HSMWorks is very fast, reducing the number of times you have to regenerate your toolpath can save you a lot of time. The toolpath has to be regenerated whenever you make significant changes to the model or to the operation. Additionally, operations which are rest-machining from other operations need to be regenerated whenever one or more of the source operations are changed.

HSMWorks automatically determines which (if any) operations a change affects and invalidates the operations accordingly to avoid unnecessary regeneration.

Measuring Distances in the Simulation

In the HSMWorks Simulation you can measure the distances between two toolpaths, or between a toolpath and the model surface using the following procedure:
1. Press and hold the shift key.

2. Press and hold the left mouse button on a toolpath point or a anywhere on the model surface.

3. Optional: Release the shift key.

4. While still holding the left mouse button, move the cursor over other toolpath points or the model surface.
This will show a tool tip with the coordinates of the two points and the distance between these.

Previewing and Simulating Toolpaths While Calculating

In HSMWorks you can preview and simulate toolpaths even while they are being calculated. So if you have a toolpath that is taking some time to calculate, you have the option to continue working by pressing Hide on the Task Manager (if it is visible).

If you select a calculating operation, the preview will show the toolpath generated up to this point. This can be very useful for spotting incorrect parameters - like an incorrect machining boundary - without waiting for the calculation to finish.

Direction Stock Colorization

No135 image-0002

HSMWorks 2010 introduces a new stock colorization option called "Direction" useful for analysis of cutting direction. The toolpath of interest would be the indicated by abrupt changes in color. The new option is available through the right-click menu during normal simulation.

Simulation Bookmarks

In HSMWorks 2010 we have introduced a new bookmarks feature in the simulation window.

You can add, view and remove bookmarks by right-clicking in the model window while in Simulation, and then navigating to the Bookmarks menu.
