Facing With 2D Pocket and 2D Adaptive

For most applications, the Face strategy is the most appropriate option for facing a part, as this provides a very efficient toolpath for clearing an area with a large cutter. In some cases, however, it may be beneficial to use an alternative strategy for facing, and for this reason it is very easy to set up both the 2D Pocket and 2D Adaptive strategies to face a part.

2D Adaptive "Use Slot Clearing"

Enable this setting to start pocket clearing with a slot along its middle before continuing with spiral motion towards the pocket wall.
This feature can be used to reduce linking motion at corners for some pockets.

Pocket Clearing Core Roughing (Boundary "None")

You can now choose a machining boundary of "None" for Pocket Clearing.

Choosing "None" as the machining boundary puts the Pocket Clearing strategy in Core Roughing mode, where it starts from outside of the Job Stock instead of ramping down.

2D Rest Roughing

To rest rough a 2D Pocket, enable the "Rest Machining" check box on the geometry tab, and enter the tool diameter, tool corner radius and stock to leave settings that was used previously on the geometry.

So if, for example, you start roughing with a 20mm tool that does not fit in all areas of a given pocket, then make another 2D Pocket operation with a smaller tool, and specify 20mm for the "Rest Material Tool Diameter" parameter.

The Minimum Cutting Radius Parameter

The Adaptive Clearing strategy is designed to always produce smooth cutting passes - as long as there is stock left on a given machining level. When approaching the model for the final pass, the smoothness of the toolpath will however depend on the geometry - and the minimum cutting radius parameter.

Without specifying a minimum cutting radius, you will get a tight trochoidal motion with sharp movements - but only if the geometry has sharp corners like the indent on the right:

Core Roughing with Pocket Clearing

In HSMWorks it is possible to use the Pocket Clearing strategy for core roughing. The machining is generally done from the outside moving inwards similar to Adaptive Clearing but note that you can still get full-width cuts for the core roughing between islands. Simply specify a stock boundary by selecting the contours of the stock, and HSMWorks will start outside the stock contour. You can prevent all ramping in stock by choosing the "Plunge Outside Stock" ramp setting. When selected, any cutting passes not reachable without ramping in stock will automatically be discarded.
