HSMWorks Network Installation Options

When deploying HSMWorks on a network in schools or larger companies, the IT department will often use automated deployment tools to install HSMWorks on all the PC's. This tip highlights a few options that are useful in this scenario.

Silent Installation

The installer can be made silent by passing /SILENT on the command line. It will still show progress and a few dialog boxes, but this is by design and avoids the user thinking that the system has hung. There are a few other options that may be useful to you, and I have listed these below. To make the installation run completely in the background, use "/SILENT /VERYSILENT /SUPPRESSMSGBOXES /NOCANCEL"

Force Use of Floating License

In silent mode the activation dialog will not be shown. Should you wish to, you can just run it separately after the installation. Just run "activationform.exe --onlyifnotactivated" from the HSMWorks installation directory. However, if you are installing a license server, you may prefer to set the license options directly in the registry.

Using Dongles

Before a dongle can be used, the dongle must be attached to a license. This can only be done by HSMWorks!
To attach a dongle please send the dongle number (as printed on the dongle label) and the license number to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Once the dongle has been attached, you will see the dongle number listed on the Licenses page in the ordering system.
If a permanent license has already been activated, the customer will have to de-activate the system before we attach the dongle, so please check that no permanent licenses are activated before e-mailing the dongle information to us.

How to Switch From a Stand-Alone Evaluation License to a USB Key (Dongle)

During your evaluation you have been using a stand-alone activation. Since you have chosen to use a USB device (Dongle) for software activation, you need to change your HSMWorks activation.

We suggest you convert from the Stand-alone license to a Dongle when you have at least 15 minutes, during regular working hours, and when you do not have a "hot" job pending in case there are any problems.

This process is very simple and we do not anticipate any problems. However, when you place your order we extend your evaluations system(s) by at least 30 days to give you plenty of time to convert to the USB Key. This way if you encounter a problem you can just re-activate using the Stand-Alone License code so you can continue programming. We can usually resolve any USB licensing options within a few hours.

Manually Activate HSMWorks License-Not Connected to Internet

For automatic activation we require your PC be connected to the internet during the activation process. After activation, you can disconnect from the internet and continue to run HSMWorks. If you do not want to connect the PC to the internet you can still activate your HSMWorks license using the procedures below.

I recommend downloading and printing the Manual Activation Step-by-Step instructions.

Here are the steps for Manual Activation.

Network License Manager Instructions

How it Works

HSMWorks uses a software licensing scheme virtually identical to SolidWorks. There are two types of licenses:

  • Stand-Alone License(s)
  • Network Licenses

Stand-Alone License

Stand-Alone licenses use an access code* issued by HSMWorks. Your PC must have Web access so the PC can check our servers. When this happens, your computer "checks out" a license from our servers. Once the computer has checked out the license, it does not have to remain connected to the web.

Moving HSMWorks to a Different PC

When you are using HSMWorks without a dongle or license server, the activation is the equivalent to a physical HASP. Thus, it is very important to remember to deactivate your license if you are moving HSMWorks to a different PC.

The license is automatically deactivated as part of the un-installation process, so if you don't plan to use HSMWorks on the original PC in the future, simply uninstall HSMWorks.

During the uninstall process the following dialog is shown:

Compatible Anti-Virus/Security Packages

Modern anti-virus and security packages work by integrating with the operating system at a very low level, so that they can intercept malicious activities from any potential threat.

An inherent problem with this approach is that it affects the performance of the system. How much or how little depends on the specific anti virus program in question, and may vary from version to version.

Also, some packages may restrict the actions of an application (such as HSMWorks), and prevent correct installation or operation.

So before reporting an installation or performance problem, please try to disable your security package and see if the problem disappears. In some cases disabling the package may not be enough, and uninstalling the package will be necessary.

Verifying Connection to the License Manager

When using floating licenses, and especially if using VPN or similar connections, HSMWorks may not be able to see or connect to the license manager, resulting in a "No licensemanager found" error when starting HSMWorks.

To verify the connection to the license manger HSMWorks includes a command-line tool "clientlm.exe" that can be used to verify the license manager connection.

From a command prompt, navigate to the HSMWorks installation dir, and run the following commands:
