Turning Feed & Speeds

In Turning, it is common to set the speed using Constant Surface Speed (CSS) so that the spindle speed depends on the diameter of the stock, and is no longer constant (this is opposite to milling tools where there the surface speed only depends on the RPM and tool diameter).

To aid the user in setting up the feed and speeds, HSMWorks calculates an example spindle speed and example feedrates using a stock diameter value provided by the user in the Diameter field shown below.

When Are the Different Feedrates Used?

HSMWorks has a set of different feed rates that can be defined on each tool. This list describes when the different feedrates are used:

Cutting feedrate

The primary feedrate used when removing material.

Colored blue in preview and simulation.
