Ramping With Compensation

When using both compensation in control (G41/G42) and ramping for 2D contour, the ramp toolpath will also use compensation in control.

Sharp Corners for 2D Contour (Outer Corner Mode)

When machining outer corners, it may be necessary to avoid rolling around the corner in order to leave the corner perfectly sharp.

The 2D Contour can machine outer corners in three different ways, controlled by the Outer Corner Mode parameter, which has the following settings:

nl199 tip1

Roll around corner
Keeps contact with the corner throughout the motion.

nl199 tip2

Keep sharp corner
Continues the toolpath to a single point corner, loosing contact with the material temporarily.

Keep sharp corner with loop
Like Keep sharp corner, but also performs a horizontal lead-out and lead in at the corner.

Extending the 2D Contour Geometry

When selecting geometry for the 2D Contour strategy you may want to start the toolpath further away from the model than what you can directly select on the geometry.
The following screenshot shows an example without any extensions.

2D Contour- Finishing vs. Roughing Passes

In the 2D Contour strategy, you have a number of options for controlling the number and behavior of the passes.

In this tip, we will investigate the behavior of the options "Multiple finishing passes" and "Roughing passes".

Comparing sharp and smooth corners

HSMWorks 2011 introduced a new feature for rounding inner corners for the 3D contour strategy. This feature is used to avoid sharp corners and allows machining with higher feeds. The user specifies the minimum cutting radius directly and the passes are then rounded to ensure that no sharp corners occur below the given radius. Minimum cutting radii up to the cutter radius are supported.
