Check in With Tyler at San Diego State University

I just wanted to share a few pictures of my latest project here in the ME shop. This is an aluminum fuselage bladder mold for the Design Build Fly team (DBF) here on campus. They will be laying up pre-preg carbon fiber sheets and clamping the two halves together under heat then inflating the bladder to maintain the features of the mold. They brought me $860 of aluminum and $350 worth of tooling.

The bottom mold was a lot of fun for the first 3". I was able to take a 2.75" depth cut with a 3/4" roughing ball end mill at 22.5 IPM and 0.1" step overs. Past 3" it gave me trouble since I had to reach down so far, ~3.8". Even a 1" ball end mill with a 4" length of cut presented issues with rigidity, but once the roughing was completed it went great.
For the finishing operation I used the Scallop 3D milling strategy with 0.007" stepovers, took about 23 hours to finish. It needs almost no finishing, right out of the mill.

The top half of the mold was much simpler, just because we only had to go to a max depth of ~2.5". I also used Scallop with 0.007" stepovers for the finishing on the top, took about 18 hours.
This also came out very nice, minimal finishing outside of the mill.

Check in With Luke - HSMXpress Enthusiast

Luke

One of the things we most love about our job is hearing from our customers how much HSMWorks and HSMXpress has made our customers' lives easier and more productive. We thought you'd enjoy hearing what your peers are doing, so we plan to start sharing these stories.

For example, we recently heard from Luke from CruddCNC (www.youtube.com/cruddCNC) who has been using HSMXpress to make parts for his Quadcopters on a retrofitted desktop CNC machine.

If you have a great story, let us know!  We'd love to share your story to help inform and inspire the user community.

The Future of HSMWorks for SolidWorks

Friends,

The acquisition of HSMWorks by Autodesk, Inc. obviously created some uncertainty about the future of an HSMWorks for SolidWorks product. We have been relieved since to get many direct and unambiguous commitments, from the highest levels at Autodesk, on continuing to offer and update HSMWorks for SolidWorks. I am glad to report that everyone else I have been in contact with at Autodesk has echoed and amplified this commitment.

Last week I attended Autodesk University (think: Autodesk's version of SolidWorks World). The event started off with a keynote by Jeff Kowalski, Chief Technology Officer at Autodesk stating, "At Autodesk we are tool makers. We make tools for you guys -the ones who are imagining, designing and creating a better world." This statement was profound because it reflects a big shift underway at Autodesk and how the HSMWorks acquisition is a major part of this change.

Edit HSMWorks/HSMXpress Expressions

Most of the parameters in HSMWorks has default values based on expressions involving other parameters, such as the tool diameter (referenced by tool_diameter in an expression). You can enter a new expression directly in a parameter field or you can modify an existing expression by using the Edit Expression option.

To edit an expression, right-click in the parameter field and choose Edit Expression, or simply press F2 while the parameter field has focus.

Job WCS From Model & Orientation

Model & Orientation is similar to Stock & Orientation but the WCS origin will be associative to the model rather than the stock.

While the distinction between the two modes is fairly subtle, it can be very handy in some situations.
